War in Yemen
For eleven years, the people of Yemen have been suffering from the conflict. The country lacks practically everything, including clean water. That is why diseases like cholera keep breaking out.
For eleven years, the people of Yemen have been suffering from the conflict. The country lacks practically everything, including clean water. That is why diseases like cholera keep breaking out.
Even before the war, Yemen was one of the poorest countries in the world. As hardship continues to grow, international aid is steadily declining. Many families are forced to sell their belongings just to survive. They are weakened and vulnerable to disease.
More frequent droughts and the excessive use of groundwater (primarily for agriculture and private households) are further exacerbating the situation. The falling groundwater level is causing seawater to intrude inland and contaminate drinking water sources. In many coastal regions, the water has become unusable as a result. This has serious consequences: the situation regarding water, sanitation, and hygiene is catastrophic. Infectious diseases such as cholera are spreading rapidly and are often fatal for malnourished people.
Access to clean drinking water for everyone
The water desalination system can filter and desalinate water and is powered by solar energy. The community is home to about 400 families, totaling around 2,800 people. Thanks to the new water desalination plant, they all have access to clean water.
Sustainable Water Management
Two water management committees will be formed and trained, consisting of community members. They will be responsible for operating the water desalination system, as well as for its administration and maintenance. They will also ensure that the water is used sustainably and distributed fairly within the community.
Know-how
Volunteers from the community are trained to raise awareness of hygiene within their communities. They educate men, women, and children about important hygiene practices. The information is culturally appropriate, tailored to local conditions, and aligns with the guidelines of the WASH Cluster, the WHO, and the Ministry of Health.
