Hunger crisis in Sudan and South Sudan

One of the most dramatic current hunger disasters is taking its toll: many people fleeing from civil war are on the brink of starvation.

Crisis situation

Nowhere safe from hunger.

Over 8 million people, many of them children, are fleeing one of the most brutal wars, both within Sudan and to neighboring countries like South Sudan. As a result, nearly every second person in the country relies on humanitarian aid. Even more people are affected by widespread sexual violence, terror against civilians, and arbitrary attacks on residential areas. They are systematically starved, as both warring parties—the army (SAF) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—use hunger as a weapon. The situation is especially dire: even if people manage to flee, they are not safe. Attacks are common in refugee camps, and food is extremely scarce there as well.

Emergency measures

The essentials for families.

Together with our partner organization ZOA, we provide emergency assistance to families in the severely affected border region between Sudan and South Sudan, specifically in the Gedaref (Sudan) and Aweil (South Sudan) refugee camps, supplying them with essential items and initial support to rebuild their livelihoods.
  • 1

Food, drinking water, and specialized nutrition for malnourished children

    Survival for thousands of families

In the two refugee camps in Gedaref (Sudan) and Aweil (South Sudan), we provide urgent food aid primarily for families by distributing food packages containing beans, sorghum/corn flour, oil, salt, and other essential ingredients. Malnourished children receive special food, and we provide thousands of people with access to clean drinking water and hygiene supplies.

  • 2

Support center for people with disabilities

    Protecting the weakest

Vulnerable people, such as the elderly or people with injuries and disabilities, are particularly at risk. At the refugee camp in Gedaref (Sudan), we run a support center for these individuals, where we assist them with advice and practical help, such as providing medical aids.

  • 3

    Agricultural support

    First steps towards self-sufficiency

Many families are expected to remain in the vast refugee camps for a long time. That’s why, during the acute emergency aid phase, we also support the initial steps toward rebuilding. In Aweil (South Sudan), we offer training in field farming, provide simple agricultural tools, and distribute seeds with the goal of helping as many families as possible get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
