Escalation of conflict in eastern Congo
Even before the violent fighting in January 2025, living conditions in Goma, North Kivu, were disastrous. The recent riots make them unbearable.
Even before the violent fighting in January 2025, living conditions in Goma, North Kivu, were disastrous. The recent riots make them unbearable.
In Goma, the capital of North Kivu , the destructive advance of the M23 militia against the government groups in January 2025 led to an escalation of violence. As a result of the fighting, the infrastructure in Goma has been severely damaged. Water pipes have been destroyed, electricity has failed, roads for the delivery of essential goods are blocked and there is no access to GPS or the internet. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. Over 500,000 civilians have been displaced. Hunger and malnutrition are increasing dramatically, hospitals are overburdened and sexual violence has risen sharply.
The region in and around Goma has been in a state of emergency for decades, even before the latest violent clashes. The overcrowded camps for displaced people on the outskirts of the city bear witness to the recurring battles between government troops and armed groups, which are rooted in historical ethnic and geopolitical conflicts. Civilians have always been the victims in and around the eastern Congolese city: They lack clean water, food and safe shelter. Now even more so.
Stay healthy
2,000 households have access to clean drinking water. The water is pumped from Lake Kivu or other suitable water reservoirs, treated with chlorine and tested for quality. It is then distributed to selected locations using water trucks. This protects against epidemic diseases such as cholera.
