Situation

A country in dire need.

According to estimates by development organizations, three quarters of the population in South Sudan need humanitarian aid. There are many reasons for this: natural disasters such as droughts and floods, as well as economic instability and dependence on neighboring countries, which have led to food becoming massively more expensive. Famine and armed conflicts are contributing to the fact that more than two million people are on the run within the country.

In our project area, there are repeated violent clashes between the population groups living there. Many children work as shepherds to protect the valuable livestock. This is one of the reasons for the low school enrolment rate. Girls often drop out of school because they are married off early and have to take care of the household and children. This leaves young people with limited prospects for the future.

Overview

Last place in the Human Development Index.

At 644,329 km2, South Sudan is more than fifteen times the size of Switzerland.
11 million people live in South Sudan, about a fifth more than in Switzerland.
Last place out of 193 countries in the Human Development Index - Switzerland is in first place.
Agriculture contributes 20% to the GDP. In Switzerland, it is less than 1%.
99 out of every 1,000 babies die in South Sudan - twenty-six times more than in Switzerland.

Vision

We are committed to ensuring that young people in South Sudan can attend school and gain a future perspective. "Education instead of dropping out" and peacebuilding are key focus areas for ena. We provide advanced training for motivated teachers and promote peaceful coexistence among different ethnic groups.

Approach

Development through peace and education.

Together with our local partner organization ACROSS, we work to provide quality basic education for children and young people and to foster peaceful coexistence in the Jebel Boma region of South Sudan. For regular schooling to occur and for children to develop healthily, a certain level of security is essential. Therefore, peacebuilding in the Boma region is a crucial foundation. With a decrease in raids and thefts, families can once again tend to their fields, helping to reduce poverty and hunger.
  • School education

    Motivation through training for teachers

To ensure students enjoy attending school, regular and quality training for teachers is essential. Teachers are more likely to stay at a school long-term if they are satisfied with their working conditions. Motivated teachers and "school mothers" can help convince girls and their families that education is important for them as well. As a result, more girls complete school before getting married.

  • Functional school infrastructure

    Learners should feel comfortable

A functional school infrastructure is essential for a positive learning environment. Therefore, in the project area, damaged and rundown school buildings are being renovated. School desks, tables, mats, and office chairs are being provided for both school centers. Additionally, the construction of safe, gender-separated latrines contributes to better well-being, especially for girls.

  • Peacebuilding

    Resolving conflicts peacefully

A key foundation for functioning schools is peace. To ensure and maintain it, peace committees are being established. Additionally, young people in school learn how to resolve conflicts peacefully. Each year, a peace dialogue and a peace tournament are held with participants from various ethnic communities.

Impact

Every donation changes lives in South Sudan.

44 teachers are being trained.

School leadership members in the project area receive annual training. Additionally, teachers are provided with a daily meal, which boosts motivation and positively impacts the learning environment.

245 young women receive hygiene articles.

Girls and young women are provided with hygiene products so they can attend school even during their menstrual periods.

250 young people attend mixed-ethnicity sports events.

Through sporting events, members of the three population groups interact with each other in a safe environment, allowing them to get to know and appreciate one another.
