Over 750 million adults worldwide are illiterate and cannot read or write. Without an education, many people have no prospects.
In Zambia alone, nearly one and a half million children are orphans. As some of the most vulnerable members of society, they often have no access to education. Although classes are free, additional costs for school uniforms, supplies, and exam fees create insurmountable barriers for poorer families and orphans. Without education, these children and young people face a challenging future.
Together with its partner organizations, ena is committed to ensuring that more people worldwide complete their education, giving them the opportunity for a successful start to their careers and a stable livelihood.
Vocational training
In Peru, people with disabilities often live on the margins of society and feel useless. Together with alocal partner organization, ena provides them with vocational training in handicrafts and entrepreneurship. In this way, the aid is sustainable and helps project participants to integrate into the local labor market.
Inclusion
In Bangladesh, many girls are unable to finish school. Additionally, violence against women is widespread. Empowering women has a positive effect on families and society as a whole, strengthening the role of women and the livelihood of families.
Peacebuilding
For learning to be the focus in schools, there must be peace. That’s why ena is working in South Sudan to teach non-violent conflict resolution in schools. Young people from different ethnic backgrounds learn to interact peacefully. Those who have missed school years due to conflicts are given the opportunity to catch up.
In the Huánuco region of Peru, 144 people with disabilities receive vocational training in textile work, metal construction, gastronomy, or gardening.
In Bangladesh, child marriages are still widespread, and girls' rights are severely restricted. It is a success that four out of five girls in the project area successfully complete primary school.
In South Sudan, 850 young people attend an accelerated learning school every year, giving older children in particular the opportunity to catch up on missed qualifications in four years instead of eight.
