Peru

In the remote highlands of Peru, we provide vocational training for young people and people with disabilities. This is how we create prospects.

Situation

Vocational training as the key to the future.

While certain parts of Peru are experiencing progress, many people in the highlands continue to live in poverty. It is particularly hard for people with disabilities. They have no opportunity to complete an education and are dependent on family help, often without any prospects. Youth unemployment in these areas is also alarmingly high.

Only one or one in 20 young people meet the requirements for university. Vocational training is often not available. So what is a young person supposed to do after regular schooling? Without training, young people have little chance of breaking out of the cycle of poverty. The risk of slipping into illegality or migrating to the cities increases.

Overview

No prospects without training.

At 1,285,220 km2, Peru is around 30 times the size of Switzerland.
Around 34 million people live in Peru, which is nearly four times more than in Switzerland.
87th place out of 193 countries in the Human Development Index - Switzerland is in first place.
Over 41% of people in the highlands live below the poverty line.
14 out of every 1,000 babies die in Peru - around ten more than in Switzerland.

Vision

We are committed to ensuring that young people in rural Peru have prospects for the future and that people with disabilities can complete their education. Education for all and inclusion are important principles of ena. Many NGOs have withdrawn from Peru: We will remain until the country's economic development has also reached the people in the highlands.

Approach

Education is key.

In the Apurímac region, we are working with our local partner organization Paz y Esperanza to improve vocational training. This gives young people a real opportunity for the future. A second project in collaboration with Renacer in the Huánuco region enables vocational training for people with disabilities. Thanks to basic craft training, individuals living in poverty can support themselves or at least contribute to their livelihoods.
  • Independence

    Your business, your money

In addition to vocational training, the program emphasizes fostering entrepreneurial thinking. Using design thinking methods, learners identify which products are currently in demand in their region and develop practical, efficient strategies and business models. It's learning for life with direct impact measurement.

  • Vocational training

    Qualified vocational teachers

In Peru, there are vocational training centers. Unfortunately, conditions in rural areas are often precarious, with a shortage of qualified teachers. To address this, teachers receive further training, including a certificate in "Pedagogy and Entrepreneurship." This is the first of its kind in Peru. A team of trained teachers represents the interests and concerns of the Apurímac region at the national level, raising awareness of the importance of quality, labor-market-oriented vocational education.

  • Inclusion

A job provides income and a sense of self-worth

People with disabilities are often destined from birth not to be part of the workforce. At best, they receive a small pension that is insufficient for survival. Education: nonexistent. Through the project, they have the opportunity to receive vocational training in various workshops. Blind men knit, women with autism work in gardening, and people in wheelchairs weld, earning their own income.

Impact

Every donation changes lives in Peru.

500 young people complete vocational training.

This enables them to enter the workforce. With the added knowledge of managing their own business, they can start right away and earn their own income.

85 teachers are trained.

This makes working in a vocational training center much more attractive. The improved pedagogical and technical skills of the teaching staff are a benefit for everyone.

40 people with a disability are completing an apprenticeship.

The training gives them the opportunity to earn their own living. In addition, their position in society changes: they become self-confident, active members.
