Hunger crisis in Sudan and South Sudan

The most severe famine currently unfolding is taking its toll: many people fleeing the civil war are on the brink of starvation.

Crisis situation

Nowhere safe from hunger.

Almost 13 million people, many of them children, have fled one of the cruellest wars. Many within Sudan, but also to neighboring countries such as South Sudan. As a result, almost two thirds of the Sudanese population are dependent on humanitarian aid.
Many more people are affected by massive sexual violence, terror against civilians and indiscriminate attacks on residential areas. They are being systematically starved because both warring parties - the army (SAF) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) - are using hunger as a weapon. What is particularly terrible is that even if they manage to escape, they are not safe: attacks are also a daily occurrence in the displaced persons camps and food is extremely scarce there too, if there is any at all.

Emergency measures

The essentials for families.

Together with our partner organization ZOA, our emergency aid provides families in displaced persons camps in Aweil in South Sudan (on the border with Sudan) with the basic necessities for survival. By cultivating crops and rehabilitating wells, we are helping to create livelihoods and give families more independence again.

    Vital emergency aid

    Access to drinking water

In Aweil (South Sudan), five wells were rehabilitated and four new wells were constructed. This enabled us to provide 2,490 households—a total of 15,940 people—with access to clean water. In addition, nine water management committees were established and trained to manage the repaired and newly built wells in the future. Furthermore, 11,960 people received education on various hygiene topics. Other Activities —including well repairs and the distribution of tools—are already in the planning stages, so that even more families can become self-sufficient.

    Training in arable farming

    Helping people to help themselves

Already 300 people - mainly women - have been trained in agriculture. Thanks to the seeds provided and the new agricultural skills, the families are able to grow staple foods, which are crucial for improving their food security.

    Agricultural support

    First steps towards self-sufficiency

Many families are expected to have to remain in the displacement camps for a very long time. That is why we are also supporting the initial steps toward reconstruction. In Aweil, 600 households have already been provided with seeds and tools for growing staple foods
