Poor hygiene or unclean drinking water causes illness. With simple measures, we can prevent many infections and create new possibilities.
Poor hygiene or unclean drinking water causes illness. With simple measures, we can prevent many infections and create new possibilities.
Worldwide, half a million children die each year from diarrheal diseases. Even when infections from viruses, bacteria, or parasites aren’t fatal, they weaken those affected. Growing children, in particular, experience developmental setbacks, and adults are less productive when unwell, resulting in lower earnings.
Girls and women, in particular, spend a lot of time fetching water. This time is lost for school and paid work. Additionally, they are often exposed to health risks in the process.
Still, 6 percent of people worldwide relieve themselves outdoors, and another 8 percent have access only to unhygienic latrines. This spreads disease and pushes a healthy, safe future further out of reach for those affected.
We create a healthy environment where people can grow and reach their potential. By providing safe drinking water and hygiene, we prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Drinking water
In Uganda, our partner organization builds rainwater tanks and spring water catchments with local communities, making precious water available close to settlements. This eliminates long journeys, leaving more time for school and work.
Sanitation facilities
In Bangladesh, women learn the importance of safe latrines in hygiene training courses. They also learn where and how they can be built. The members of the various groups pass on their knowledge, benefiting entire villages.
Hygiene
In South Sudan, seven practices are taught to promote everyday hygiene: handwashing, a clothesline for clean laundry, a dish rack, waste disposal outside the settlement, a clay stove for boiling, a shower hut, and a latrine. These measures help significantly reduce diarrheal diseases.
