Health

Poor hygiene or unclean drinking water causes illness. With simple measures, we can prevent many infections and create new possibilities.

Situation

Sick due to poor hygiene.

Every year, half a million children worldwide die from diarrheal diseases. Even if an infection with viruses, bacteria or parasites is not fatal, those affected are weakened. The development of growing children in particular is impaired. Adults are also less productive if they are not healthy and therefore earn less.

Girls and women, in particular, spend a lot of time fetching water. This time is lost for school and paid work. Additionally, they are often exposed to health risks in the process.

Still, 6 percent of people worldwide relieve themselves outdoors, and another 8 percent have access only to unhygienic latrines. This spreads disease and pushes a healthy, safe future further out of reach for those affected.

Hunger crisis in Sudan and South Sudan

Many civil war refugees are on the brink of starvation.

Vision

We create a healthy environment where people can grow and reach their potential. By providing safe drinking water and hygiene, we prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Approach

Prevention is better than cure.

Preventing diseases is simpler and more cost-effective than treating them. The key methods are safe drinking water and hygienic waste disposal. In Bangladesh and South Sudan, for example, families learn how to build safe latrines. In Uganda, our partner organization works with communities in mountain villages to build safe water supply systems.
  • Drinking water

    Water is life

In Uganda, our partner organization is working with the local population to build rainwater tanks and lay pipes for spring water. This makes the precious water available close to the settlements. The long distances are eliminated and there is more time for school and work.

  • Sanitation facilities

    Latrine instead of bush

In Bangladesh, women learn the importance of safe latrines in hygiene training courses. They also learn where and how they can be built. The members of the various groups pass on their knowledge, benefiting entire villages.

  • Hygiene

    Clean hands, clean dishes

In South Sudan, seven practices are taught to promote everyday hygiene: handwashing, a clothesline for clean laundry, a dish rack, waste disposal outside the settlement, a clay stove for boiling, a shower hut, and a latrine. These measures help significantly reduce diarrheal diseases.

Impact

Every donation is particularly effective thanks to prevention.

2,000 families

have access to clean drinking water every year.

850 children

in South Sudan can use a hygienic, gender-segregated sanitary facility.

15,000 people

have learned to protect themselves from diseases through hygiene.
