Uganda is a developing country with a high population growth rate. In the southwest, valleys are used for agriculture and are often flooded during the rainy season, prompting people to settle in higher regions—often far from water sources. Women and children travel for hours on foot to fetch water, forcing them to make do with only a few liters. Cooking and drinking take priority, while personal hygiene and garden irrigation are often neglected. This leads to diseases and poor harvests.
In the southeastern part of the country, there is significant poverty, and many children have to work instead of attending school. Particularly in the Namayingo District, many children work in hazardous jobs, such as in gold mines or as fishermen. As a result, they have no prospects for a better future.
We protect children from exploitation, support parents in achieving a sufficient income, and provide access to water where it is lacking. In doing so, we involve the local people, train them, and create long-term opportunities.
Thanks to new water pipelines, rainwater tanks, and the protection of springs, clean water flows into many villages. The exhausting walks for water are eliminated, allowing children to return to school. Parents have more water and time for farming, leading to better harvests. At the same time, villagers learn about important hygiene measures and health topics, further improving their quality of life.
We are committed to bringing working children back to school. By improving the income and living conditions of families, we are successfully achieving this. Additionally, we create more child-friendly schools and advocate for strengthening protection through new and existing child protection laws.
Families can bring in more harvests thanks to training and the use of better agricultural cultivation methods. This means that the children no longer have to contribute to the family income. By participating in savings and lending groups, parents can cover the costs of their children's education themselves in the long term.
"Years ago, my son did community service in an ena project. His experiences convinced me how directly and personally the work benefits people on the ground."

They are less often ill, achieve better harvests, and the children have time to go to school. This secures their livelihoods and provides the opportunity for a life free from poverty.
As a result, they have better future prospects. Furthermore, we enhance school conditions by creating a child-friendly, learning-oriented environment. Teachers are made aware of children's rights.
This improves the families' nutrition. The surplus harvests can be sold in the market, providing families with enough income so that the children can attend school.
