Uganda

In Uganda, water scarcity and poverty lead to harsh living conditions: children have to work instead of going to school. We create opportunities for the children and their families.

Changing lives

Nadassa's story

A girl called Nadassa is walking along a path with a water canister on her head.

Situation

Everyday life: water scarcity and child labor.

Uganda is a developing country with a high population growth rate. In the southwest, valleys are used for agriculture and are often flooded during the rainy season, prompting people to settle in higher regions—often far from water sources. Women and children travel for hours on foot to fetch water, forcing them to make do with only a few liters. Cooking and drinking take priority, while personal hygiene and garden irrigation are often neglected. This leads to diseases and poor harvests.

In the southeastern part of the country, there is significant poverty, and many children have to work instead of attending school. Particularly in the Namayingo District, many children work in hazardous jobs, such as in gold mines or as fishermen. As a result, they have no prospects for a better future.

Overview

Without water, no life.

At 241,600 km2, Uganda is almost 6 times the size of Switzerland.
Around 45 million people live in Uganda, almost 5 times more than in Switzerland.
159th out of 193 countries in the Human Development Index - Switzerland is in first place.
Agriculture contributes 24% to GDP compared to less than 1% in Switzerland.
39 out of every 1,000 babies die in Uganda - ten times more than in Switzerland.

Vision

We protect children from exploitation, support parents in achieving a sufficient income, and provide access to water where it is lacking. In doing so, we involve the local people, train them, and create long-term opportunities.

Approach

Access to water and education changes lives.

Together with our two partner organizations, KDWSP and CaRNaC, we are involved in two comprehensive projects in the southwest and southeast of Uganda. We create livelihoods, invest in health promotion, and work towards the education of children.
  • Water

    Better agricultural yields

Thanks to new water pipelines, rainwater tanks, and the protection of springs, clean water flows into many villages. The exhausting walks for water are eliminated, allowing children to return to school. Parents have more water and time for farming, leading to better harvests. At the same time, villagers learn about important hygiene measures and health topics, further improving their quality of life.

  • Child protection

    Education instead of child labor

We are committed to bringing working children back to school. By improving the income and living conditions of families, we are successfully achieving this. Additionally, we create more child-friendly schools and advocate for strengthening protection through new and existing child protection laws.

  • Income support

Financial prospects for a self-determined life

Families can bring in more harvests thanks to training and the use of better agricultural cultivation methods. This means that the children no longer have to contribute to the family income. By participating in savings and lending groups, parents can cover the costs of their children's education themselves in the long term.

"Years ago, my son did community service in an ena project. His experiences convinced me how directly and personally the work benefits people on the ground."

Impact

Every donation changes lives in Uganda.

6,100 villagers gain access to clean water every year.

They are less often ill, achieve better harvests, and the children have time to go to school. This secures their livelihoods and provides the opportunity for a life free from poverty.

900 children at risk go back to school.

As a result, they have better future prospects. Furthermore, we enhance school conditions by creating a child-friendly, learning-oriented environment. Teachers are made aware of children's rights.

155 families learn new farming methods.

This improves the families' nutrition. The surplus harvests can be sold in the market, providing families with enough income so that the children can attend school.
