Situation

Limited possibilities.

40% of people in Bangladesh live below the poverty line. Many of them in rural regions. And almost half of these people can do nothing about it: many women are forbidden to work. Traditionally, the man earns the income in Bangladesh - usually as a day laborer working in the fields or in fish farming. Women's everyday lives are often limited to housework and raising children. Discrimination and domestic violence are widespread and they have little say within the family, not to mention the opportunity to pursue education or training outside the home. Many pregnant and breastfeeding women receive inadequate medical care. Girls are often considered a financial and social burden and are frequently married off as minors: more than half of girls in Bangladesh are under 18 years old when they get married. This is often followed shortly afterwards by their first pregnancy and dropping out of school. They face a difficult future with limited opportunities.

Overview

One country, much injustice.

At 147,570 km2, Bangladesh is around three and a half times the size of Switzerland.
171 million people live in Bangladesh, a good nineteen times more than in Switzerland.
Ranked 129 out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index – Switzerland is ranked 1st.
On the Gender Inequality Index, Bangladesh ranks 131 out of 170.

Vision

Women can transform a society—when they are able to reach their full potential. In Bangladesh, we focus on reducing gender-based violence and empowering women through education and employment opportunities. This effort is built on raising awareness across society about women's rights and capabilities.

Approach

Strong women mean strong families.

Together with our partner organization Sathi, our project 'Strong Women. Strong Families.' protects women and girls from violence and discrimination and improves the social, economic, and environmental security of people in the Dhobaura sub-district.
  • Women's rights

    Women claim their rights

Together, we are making women's voices heard and empowering them to claim their rights. This includes protecting girls from child marriage and sending them to school instead, reducing domestic violence in families, giving women the right to work, income and freedom of movement and giving women a say in family planning.

  • Livelihood

    The woman is herself

Women are trained in poultry farming, goat rearing, vegetable cultivation, or tailoring. This enables them to earn their own income. They also become members of savings and loan groups, allowing them to invest their savings strategically. This strengthens the women in the long term, as they gain a greater voice within their families and communities.

  • Civil protection

    Better protection against environmental disasters

Volunteers are trained in disaster preparedness and response by the government’s disaster protection committee. They learn how to prepare the community for natural disasters and support them in crisis situations (floods, droughts, cold and heat waves). This reduces the risk of loss of life and livelihoods.

Impact

Every donation changes lives in Bangladesh.

163 protection commissions are responsible for the implementation of women's rights

In all villages of the project region, a protection committee is established to ensure the safety of women and children. It works closely with the local authorities.

285 women and men learn how to earn an income

In courses, 285 particularly disadvantaged women and men are learning how to raise livestock, practice sustainable farming, or work as tailors. This gives them the opportunity to earn an income. They then share what they’ve learned with their savings and loan group.

54 volunteers prepare the population for environmental disasters

The volunteers show the population how to prepare for a natural disaster and how to act correctly in crisis situations. Their service is particularly important for the most vulnerable families.
