Together, we are creating real prospects for women in Bangladesh. And we are promoting peaceful coexistence between the host community and Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh.

40% of people in Bangladesh live below the poverty line. Traditionally, the man earns the income in Bangladesh - usually as a day laborer working in the fields or in fish farming. Women's everyday lives are often limited to housework and raising children. Discrimination and domestic violence are widespread. Education or further training outside the home is often impossible. Many pregnant and breastfeeding women receive inadequate medical care. Girls are often seen as a financial and social burden. More than half of the girls in Bangladesh are therefore married off early and are less than 18 years old when they get married. They face a difficult future with limited opportunities. In the south of the country, the constant influx of refugees in the Cox's Bazar region is exerting immense pressure on the host community. Coupled with recurring natural disasters such as flooding, this means that the host community is now also dependent on humanitarian aid.
Women change a society - if they can realize their potential. In our project work in the north of Bangladesh, we therefore focus on reducing gender-specific violence and enabling women to demand their rights, get an education and work. In the south of the country, we promote exchange and peaceful coexistence between the host community and refugees who have moved here.
Women learn to demand their rights. This includes preventing girls from marrying children and sending them to school instead, reducing domestic violence in families and giving women a say in family planning. They are trained in poultry farming, goat rearing, vegetable growing and tailoring. This enables them to earn their own income.
In the southern project region, we promote peaceful coexistence and trust between guests and host communities through events such as theater performances on the subject of human rights or equality. In order to improve the precarious conditions, we provide acute food aid to the original population and prevent epidemic diseases by providing functional access to clean water.
Volunteers are trained in disaster preparedness and response by the government’s disaster protection committee. They learn how to prepare the community for natural disasters and support them in crisis situations (floods, droughts, cold and heat waves). This reduces the risk of loss of life and livelihoods.
A protection commission is being set up in all villages in the northern project region to look after the protection of women and children. It is in close contact with the local authorities.
In courses, 285 particularly disadvantaged women and men are learning how to raise livestock, practice sustainable farming, or work as tailors. This gives them the opportunity to earn an income. They then share what they’ve learned with their savings and loan group.
The volunteers show the population how to prepare for a natural disaster and how to act correctly in crisis situations. Their service is particularly important for the most vulnerable families.
