Bangladesh
Together, we are creating real prospects for women and families in Bangladesh. And we are promoting peaceful coexistence between the host community and Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh.
Together, we are creating real prospects for women and families in Bangladesh. And we are promoting peaceful coexistence between the host community and Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh.
A quarter of people in Bangladesh live below the poverty line. Traditionally, the man earns the income - usually as a day laborer in agriculture or fish farming. The women usually take care of the household and raise the children. Discrimination and domestic violence are widespread. Many women have few opportunities to further their education outside the home. Pregnant and breastfeeding women often receive inadequate medical care. Girls are often seen as a financial and social burden. This is why more than half of girls are married off early, usually before their 18th birthday. As a result, they often face a difficult future with limited opportunities.
In the south of the country, in the Cox's Bazar region, the influx of refugees is putting a huge strain on the host community. Added to this are recurring natural disasters such as flooding. As a result, not only the refugees but also many locals are now dependent on humanitarian aid.
Women change a society - if they can develop their potential. In our projects in the north and south of Bangladesh, we are therefore committed to reducing violence against women and combating discrimination against them. We give them access to education, income and healthcare. We also strengthen their ability to stand up for their rights.
In the south of the country, peacebuilding contributes to peaceful coexistence between the host community and the Rohingya.
Women learn to demand their rights. This includes preventing girls from marrying children and sending them to school instead, reducing domestic violence in families and giving women a say in family planning. They are trained in poultry farming, goat rearing, vegetable growing and tailoring. This enables them to earn their own income.
In the southern project region, we promote peaceful coexistence and trust between the host and guest communities through events such as theater performances on the topic of human rights or health promotion activities. To improve the precarious hygienic conditions, we are building wells in the host community to provide access to clean water and latrines to prevent the spread of disease.
Volunteers are trained in disaster preparedness and response by the government’s disaster protection committee. They learn how to prepare the community for natural disasters and support them in crisis situations (floods, droughts, cold and heat waves). This reduces the risk of loss of life and livelihoods.
"Thanks to SATHEE and ena, women in Bangladesh are empowered and, together with their families, can look to the future with hope."

Support & Administration Manager, Vocational Trainer
A protection commission is being set up in all villages in the northern project region to look after the protection of women and children. It is in close contact with the local authorities.
In courses, 285 particularly disadvantaged women and men learn how to breed livestock and sustainably farm or tailor. This gives them the opportunity to earn an income. They pass on what they have learned to their savings and lending group.
The volunteers show the population how to prepare for a natural disaster and how to act correctly in crisis situations. Their service is particularly important for the most vulnerable families.
