On June 25, 2026, Venezuela was rocked by two major earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located near the densely populated capital, Caracas, which is why the metropolitan area and the northern coastal region were particularly hard hit. Many people lost their lives, were injured, or lost their homes. Many others are directly affected by the devastating consequences. The exact extent of the destruction cannot yet be fully assessed. Buildings, infrastructure, and critical utility systems were damaged or destroyed, while rescue workers and aid organizations are working tirelessly. The situation remains tense, and affected families urgently need shelter, medical care, and basic relief supplies.
Even before the natural disaster, Venezuela was in the midst of a profound economic and social crisis that had been taking a heavy toll on the population for years. Access to medical care, food, clean drinking water, and other essential goods is severely limited in many areas. The ongoing insecurity and the difficult supply situation had already made life considerably more difficult for many families even before the earthquakes.
Protection
Many people have lost their homes and urgently need a safe place to sleep. They are provided with emergency shelter as well as essential household items such as plastic tarps, canopies, mosquito nets, blankets, mats, solar lamps, and kitchen utensils, including dishes and cutlery. This ensures a minimum level of protection, infrastructure, and safety.
Supply
To alleviate immediate hunger, food packages are distributed to affected families. These packages contain basic foodstuffs for several days and ensure survival in an acute crisis situation.
Health
Cleanliness and the prevention of diseases and infections are essential even in emergency situations. That is why people receive hygiene kits containing everyday essentials such as soap and disinfectant wipes. Women receive sanitary pads, underwear, and other menstrual hygiene products. All of this helps prevent disease and preserve a sense of normalcy and dignity.
Transparency
To ensure that aid is distributed fairly, accessible mechanisms for registration, distribution, and monitoring are put in place. Complaint procedures are also available so that those affected can voice their concerns and support can be continuously improved.
