According to the UN, 120 million people worldwide are forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, or political persecution. Without peace in their own country, many people have no prospects for the future.
We turn our attention to South Sudan: In one of the poorest countries in the world, years of armed conflict and a civil war have led to widespread instability. For children and young people, this means the worst: schools have been destroyed, and many children have been recruited as child soldiers. The school enrollment rate in South Sudan is among the lowest in the world. That is why we promote peace. Because without peace, education is not possible. If the way to school is not safe, no child can go to school. And without education, there are often no prospects for the future.
Through the “Sports for Peace” initiative, young people learn important lessons about team spirit and solidarity. Through sports, they learn how important and valuable it is to treat one another with respect. Thanks to this and other project activities aimed at promoting peace in South Sudan, rival clans are able to make peace. Decades-long feuds come to an end. Peace returns.
