From the bucket to the source

In Uganda, water shortages and poverty lead to harsh living conditions: children walk for hours instead of going to school. We are creating opportunities for them and their families.

Situation

When water dominates daily life

Uganda is a less developed country with a high population growth rate. Because the valleys in the southwest of the country are used for agriculture and are often flooded during the rainy season, people are settling in increasingly higher elevations—often far from water sources. Women and children walk for hours to fetch water. As a result, they have to make do with just a few liters each day. Cooking and drinking take priority, while personal hygiene and watering the gardens often fall by the wayside. Illness and poor harvests are the result.

Changing lives

Nadassa's story

A girl called Nadassa is walking along a path with a water canister on her head.
Nadassa's video is already a few years old. However, the project approach and the positive change it has brought about are still shaping the lives of people in our project area today.

Overview

Without water, no life.

At 241,600 km2, Uganda is almost 6 times the size of Switzerland.
Around 45 million people live in Uganda, almost 5 times more than in Switzerland.
157th out of 193 countries in the Human Development Index - Switzerland is in 2nd place.
Agriculture contributes 24% to GDP compared to less than 1% in Switzerland.
35 out of every 1,000 babies die in Uganda - ten times as many as in Switzerland.

Vision

We promote access to clean water and hygiene education, focusing on an approach that empowers people to help themselves. Together with local communities, we develop solutions that can be sustained independently. In this way, we improve health, foster self-reliance, and create opportunities for current and future generations.

Our Approach

Access to water changes lives

Together with our partner organization KDWSP, we are active in southwestern Uganda, among other places. We help establish essential livelihoods, invest in health promotion, and lay the groundwork for self-determined lives.
  • Water

    Better agricultural yields

Thanks to new water pipelines, rainwater tanks, and the protection of springs, clean water flows into many villages. The exhausting walks for water are eliminated, allowing children to return to school. Parents have more water and time for farming, leading to better harvests. At the same time, villagers learn about important hygiene measures and health topics, further improving their quality of life.
