Courage in Project Work: 3 Questions for Muriel Erni – ena!

Stepping out of her comfort zone: Muriel Erni knows that well—for example, when she’s invited to dance in Malawi. In this interview, our project manager for Malawi and Peru explains where else it pays to be courageous.

Muriel, are you a courageous person?

Courage is subjective. I’d say I’m more of a thoughtful person. That doesn’t necessarily exclude being courageous. It really depends on the situation.

In what situations do you need courage?

It takes courage for me to engage in conversations with people during project trips, especially across cultural and language barriers. Sometimes, we’re welcomed by a whole group of people with cheerful dancing and singing. The project participants appreciate it when we, as visitors, join in the dancing. It’s not really my thing—I’m not someone who seeks the spotlight. But seeing the joy on their faces and honoring their presence makes it absolutely worth it.

When was the last time your courage paid off?

When I step out of my comfort zone and engage in conversations with people, we usually experience enrichment. It’s worth stepping out of your shell for that. Sharing ideas helps us all move forward.
